Khatu Shyam hamere

Jag unhe Shyam naam se jaane

woh the barbarika ke naam se pale

Balidaan se swayam Shyam prasanna hue


Bheem aur Hidimba ke pote

Ghatotkach aur Maurvi ke suputra

Aseem balshali tapasvai veer

Jo jiska saath de wahi jeet jave


Jab Krishna pahunche unke dwaar

kiya prastaav yudh me sammilit hone ka

Barbarika bole shan me ho jayeg yudh ant

Chaki rah gaye Shyam payaare


Tha Barbarika ko aisa var prapt

ki kar sakte the shan me sab samapt

sidhhanta tha unka ki saath dena balahino ka

aise me dono Pandav-Kaurav paksh ka hota ant


Krishna roop ke darshan ki aasha thi

Lo maang liya unka sheersh badle me

kaaha yudhbhoomi me sheersh daan hai avashya

uske uprant hi hogi yudh pooja prarambh


Shan bhar kibhi der na ki

De diya sheersh hatheli pe

Bas ek aasha aur prakat ki

dekh paye Mahabharath ve


Jaise hi  hoga ant

 moond loonga aankhen mein

unche kumru parvat par sheesh rakhen

Jahan se mujhe sab dikhen


Dhanya hue Barbarika is daan se

Krishna ne ghoshit kiya

Yudh ke vijay ka karan aap hi hain

Aap hi hain Khatu Shyam hamare

 The Hair-loom My grandpa Ramakrishnan had a floor mill. The mill had a Shikakai (seeka) grinder as well. Dried Shikakai, Amla, Ritha, hibiscus etc. were ground together for washing our hair.   Those days people seldom used shampoos. This powder was part of every household in the KGF town. Every Sunday morning was a hair bath day. Panjamani Atthai* or Panjattey worked in our floor mill and washed our hair every Sunday with seeka. Being the youngest, I was the first in queue followed by Rohini akka* (Chittappa’s daughter), Madhangi akka (Gowri Atthai’s daughter) and Selvi akka (Mathi Atthai’s daughter). After a long hair wash with sneezes and burning eyes, the hair was rolled up in bun with thin towel. Next, it got fumed with Sambrani smoke.
